Proper Prom Planning Prevents Poor Performance

When you’re getting ready for a big event, it is easy to forget the little details. It’s important to plan ahead. The prom day will be very busy – get as organized as possible before prom day! Here are some tips on what you should consider.

Operating hours – make sure you know when stores, etc. that you will have to visit on prom day are open. More than one girl has gone to pick up her dress on the day of the prom, only to find that the shop doesn’t open on a Saturday! Alicia’s Bridal and The Formal House are open from 10am to 5:30pm on Friday and Saturday.

Photographs – Be sure to the get a price list from the school before prom night, so you know how much your pictures at the prom will cost (it can easily cost you between $30 and $130 – or more). Check with the photographer before prom night about what your payment options are – many will accept checks or credit cards, which is much safer than carrying cash.

Eating – Eat a good breakfast and lunch on prom day. You may be scrambling around getting things ready, or feel like you can’t eat, but you will need all the energy you can get for the big night!

Appointments – when making your appointments (hair, nails, make-up, restaurant, limousine, etc) be sure to make a note of the date and time of your call, and who you spoke to. Make sure you call to confirm your reservations or appointments before the prom, just to be sure that there are no problems.

Hair – Remember to wear a button down shirt when you have your hair done.

Purse – You don’t want to be carrying around a huge purse or handbag all night. Choose a small purse that is just big enough to hold lipstick, money, an extra pair of hose, a number of small safety pins, and possibly a camera.

Prom Day!

  • Eat a healthy breakfast and lunch.
  • Don’t wash your hair (updo’s last longer with dirty hair).
  • Go to your hair, nails and makeup appointments (as appropriate). Make sure to wear a button down shirt for your hair appointment!
  • Pick up your dates boutonniere or corsage and place in your refrigerator.
  • Pack some extra cash in your purse or wallet.
  • Make sure your parents take some photos of you and your date, in case there are any problems with the professional pictures.

Most importantly – relax, have a great time, and don’t get too stressed!

Some Prom Tips for the Ladies

You want your Prom to be perfect and that takes some planning. You should make sure no one feature stands out from the rest. Your prom look is a combination of your dress, your hair, your makeup, and all of the accessories. If one thing is more noticeable than everything else, you’ve missed the mark.

Here’s some tips to make sure you put together the perfect look for your Prom.

Less is more.

Sometimes, in trying to create that perfect look, we end up overdoing it. Do we go with the smoky eye and the full red lips? Do we pair the black fishnet stockings with the short red formal? And how much jewelry is too much? If you’re asking the question, it’s probably too much. Keep it simple and you can be sure that no individual feature will overpower the overall look.

Colors

Remember, single color designs are the most slimming. And everyone knows that darker colors are slenderizing. To look your best, avoid busy patterns, and instead consider a dress that is all one color.

Keep it casual

What was up with the old style Prom hair that was so stiff and formal? Thank goodness those days are gone. Prom styles today are more soft, flowing, and loose, flattering updos. Go for the new trends and wear your hair in a way that’s comfortable for you and doesn’t require a lot of maintenance. You’re at the prom to have a good time, not to held up in the ladies room primping in front of the mirror all night.

What about jewelry? How much is too much?

The Red carpet celebrities often forego all jewelry with the possible exception of a fabulous pair of earrings. Think about taking that cue and feature your own dangling chandeliers as your sole jeweled accessory.

Black is back!

You just can’t go wrong with black. It’s slimming, chic, classy, and timeless. Wearing a simple black dress to the prom will always get you noticed. And you’ll never be embarrassed to show the pictures to your grandchildren.

Your entire prom style should blend together to result in a great look. Pay attention to the little things like color, accessories, makeup, and hair, to be sure to create a look that makes you to shine. Sometimes, when you try for a look that’s too trendy, you instead end up creating a look that gets you noticed, but for all the wrong reasons. But once you get to the prom and realize that your attempt at trendy is too over the top, it’s too late.

Go for the hair, makeup, and dress that are classy and you’ll do fine. Take the tips from the celebs. When in doubt, avoid trendy, and opt for classic Hollywood, and you’ll never miss. Prom is your night to shine. Get noticed because you’ve created the look that makes you the envy of every girl there.

Prom Night Tips For Guys

wfe1 Prom Night Tips For Guys

Prom is the time in a guy’s life when he’ll get cleaned up, get a hair cut, put on a new suit or tuxedo, and go to a great dinner and dance with a beautiful girl on his arm. For many young men and women, prom inspires visions of being at the Academy Awards or even a wedding. Every young person imagines being the best looking and best dressed one at the prom, and usually they get their wish: they all look great. But most guys haven’t thought about prom nearly as much as the ladies. While girls begin thinking about dressing up for prom years before they can actually go, boys often don’t give it a thought until the spring of their junior year when the ladies in their life begin talking about it.

Here are some tips and suggestions for the guys as you get ready for prom.

1. Choose your date. Duh! This may seem like a no brainer suggestion, but the idea is to choose your date wisely. Many ladies have an unreal expectation about prom, much like a wedding day. They may view an invitation to the prom as the next best thing to a formal engagement. If you have a steady girlfriend or a girl you’re comfortable with, by all means, take her to the prom; but if there is a girl who simply has a crush on you and would look great on your arm, think carefully before you invite her.

2. Consider the cost. You will need to either buy or rent a tuxedo or dressy suit for the prom. Most young men find it more cost effective to rent a tuxedo, especially if they want to get a bow tie and/or cummerbund to match their date’s dress. In addition to the tuxedo, costs will include tickets to the prom, dinner, a corsage for the date, a limousine rental (optional), and photographs. Girls often help with the cost, but not always. If the guy was invited by a girl, he may assume she will cover some of the cost, but if he was the one to initiate an invitation, he should assume he will pay for everything and then just be pleasantly surprised if the date contributes.

3. Make dinner reservations early. At prom time, the nicer restaurants fill up with reservations quickly, as many schools often have prom on the same night. If there is a particular restaurant you would like to go to on prom night, call at least a month in advance for reservations, and confirm your reservation a few days before the big night.

4. Consider going in a group. Often a group of couples will share the cost of a limousine and enjoy a great dinner together before the prom. If the guy doesn’t know his date well, this can also help break the ice and ensure a good time for all.

5. Prepare for the unexpected. Even the most responsible of guys may find themselves in a difficult situation involving alcohol, drugs, or inappropriate behavior. Young men should plan to carry a cell phone, if possible, or at the least have a list of phone numbers to call in the event of an emergency. Make the smart choices and just stay away from drugs and alcohol!

With a bit of good prior planning, prom night will be a great time in your life; one you won’t forget.

The History of Men’s Tuxedos and Men’s Formal Wear

There are two theories about the first tuxedo.tuxedo The History of Mens Tuxedos and Mens Formal Wear

The tuxedo was invented by Pierre Lorillard IV of New York City according to one school of thought. However, some historians believe that the tuxedo was invented by King Edward VII.

Pierre Lorillard

Pierre Lorillard’s family were wealthy tobacco magnates who owned country property in Tuxedo Park, just outside of New York City. At a formal ball, held at the Tuxedo Club in October 1886, the young Lorillard wore a new style of formal wear for men that he designed himself. He named his tailless black jacket the tuxedo after Tuxedo Park. The tuxedo caught on and became fashionable as formal wear for men.

British Origins

According to English clothing historian James Laver, the idea of wearing black for evening wear was first introduced by the nineteenth century British writer, Edward Bulwer-Lyttonn who wrote in 1828 that “people must be very distinguished to look well in black.”A resident of Tuxedo Park, James Brown Potter vacationed in England in the summer of 1886. Potter and his wife, Cora were introduced to the Prince of Wales {who later became King Edward VII} at a court ball in London. Potter asked the Prince for advice on formal dress. The Prince sent Potter to his own Saville Row tailor, Henry Poole & Co. Potter was fitted with a short black jacket and black tie that was unlike the formal tails with white tie that was worn in the United States for formal occassions.

The new tailless formal wear was said to have been designed by the Prince of Wales. The Prince and his tailor drew inspiration from the British military uniforms of the time, which used short jackets with black ties.

This is where the two origins meet. James Brown Potter took the design back to the Tuxedo Club, where Pierre Lorillard modified it, named it, and made it popular during the Autumn ball.
